Risk
There are different variations of risk. The safest is the computer assisted procedure, the most dangerous is the traditional procedure. Our illegal insurance company has decided that in any given situation, we will cover any of the three. Considering the ethical and risk factors, we cannot afford a failure.
Computer Surgery Ethics
Ethically, this surgery is the way to go. It completely relieves the human error out of the situation leaving it only to the computer system. Of course it would be unethical to not cover the procedure to due to the cost but people will walk.
Robotic Surgery Ethics
Ethically, the use of a robot limits human risk, which would make it a lot more sound for us to use the robotic knee replacement. Altogether, the results are more promising than those of the traditional procedure. It is unethical to not pay for the procedure because of the extra thousand dollars it costs, considering what the possible results may be.
Computer-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty Cost
It's essentially more costly for computer assisted knee surgery. Seeing as how regular surgery is much cheaper, we do not feel obligated to cover the costs. We also do not want to risk breaking the computer and having to pay thousands to replace it.
Robotic Total Knee Arthroplasty Cost
Compared to the traditional Knee replacement surgery, the robotically assisted one will cost $600-$1000 due to a CT scan that needs to be performed. The additional cost may make an insurance company like ours more reluctant to cover it. Of course, when you take into consideration the cost we can save off from a smaller use of drugs, we may reconsider.
